Numbering Provisions

Provisions are numbered hierarchically up to nine levels. You can choose how provisions are numbered at each level of hierarchy. For example:

  • You can number provisions at level one Article I, Article II, Article III, and so on; you can number provisions at level two Section 1.01, Section 1.02, Section 1.03, and so on; and you can number provisions at level three (a), (b), (c), and so on.

  • You can number provisions at level one 1, 2, 3, and so on; you can number provisions at level two 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and so on; and you can number provisions at level three 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and so on.

You can choose a preset numbering scheme for provisions, and you can also customize provision numbers. If you choose to customize provision numbers, it’s a good idea to choose a preset numbering scheme that’s similar to the customized numbering scheme you want to create before you begin customizing.

To choose a preset numbering scheme:
  1. Click Inspector in the toolbar, click the Provisions button at the top of the inspector window, and then click Numbering.

  2. Click the Choose Provision Numbering pop‑up menu, and then choose an option.

To customize provision numbers:
  1. Click the Choose Provision Numbering pop‑up menu in the Numbering pane of the Provisions inspector, and then choose More Options.

  2. Set provision numbers using the controls in the Provision Numbering window.

    • Prefix: Use the Prefix pop‑up menus to add a prefix (such as Section) to a provision number.

    • Number Style: Use the Number Style pop‑up menus to choose how provisions are numbered at each numbering level.

    • Punctuation: Use the Punctuation pop‑up menus to choose how provision numbers are punctuated at each numbering level.

With this number style And this punctuation option Provision numbers look like this

      I II III IV

      End with “.”

      I. II. III. IV.

      1 2 3 4

      End with “)”

      1) 2) 3) 4)

      a b c d

      Enclose in “( )”

      (a) (b) (c) (d)

    • Prepending: Use the Prepending pop‑up menus to choose how provision numbers at level one are prepended to provision numbers at level two, how provision numbers at level two are prepended to provision numbers at level three, and so on.

For example, you may want to number provisions at level one I, II, III, and so on; and level two 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and so on (in other words, you may want to prepend level one provision numbers to level two provision numbers as Arabic figures instead of Roman numerals). To do this, choose I II III IV in the Number Style pop‑up menu at level one, choose “Prepend as 1. 2. 3. 4.” in the Prepending pop‑up menu at level one, and choose 1 2 3 4 in the Number Style pop‑up menu at level two.

Options you choose in a Prepending pop‑up menu at one numbering level affect how provision numbers appear at other numbering levels. The following table illustrates one example.

At this level With this number style This punctuation option And this prepending option Provision numbers look like this

      1

      I II III IV

      None

      Prepend as 1. 2. 3. 4.

      I II III IV

      2

      End with “.”

      Prepend as 1.01 1.02 1.03 1.04

      1.01. 1.02. 1.03. 1.04.
