Using Proviso Lists

Some contracts include items that are introduced with phrases like provided that, provided, however, and so on. In Turner, these items are called provisos. Provisos are contained within proviso lists. The phrases that introduce provisos are called proviso markers.

To create a proviso list:
  • Position the insertion point where you want the proviso list to begin, and then do any of the following:

    • Choose Insert > Proviso List.

    • Press Command‑Shift‑L.

A proviso list with one proviso appears.

Here are ways to end a proviso list:
  • To end a proviso list as you’re typing it, press Return twice.

  • To end a proviso list before its current end point, position the insertion point within the last proviso in the proviso list you want to end, and then choose Format > Proviso List > End Proviso List.

You can press Command‑Option‑K to end either a proviso list or a numbered list, whichever is selected. See Using Numbered Lists to learn more about numbered lists.

To delete a proviso list:
  • Position the insertion point within the proviso list you want to delete, and then choose Format > Proviso List > Delete Proviso List.

Here are ways to work with provisos:
  • To add a proviso, position the insertion point within a proviso list, and then choose Format > Proviso List > Add Proviso or press Return.

  • To add a proviso before the one you’re working with, position the insertion point within a proviso, and then choose Insert > Item Before or press Command–Option–Up Arrow.

  • To add a proviso after the one you’re working with, position the insertion point within a proviso, and then choose Insert > Item After or press Command–Option–Down Arrow.

  • To delete a proviso, position the insertion point within the proviso you want to delete, and then choose Format > Proviso List > Delete Proviso.

  • To move a proviso before the preceding one, position the insertion point within the proviso you want to move, and then choose Format > Move Before Preceding Item or press Command–Option–Control–Up Arrow.

  • To move a proviso after the following one, position the insertion point within the proviso you want to move, and then choose Format > Move After Following Item or press Command–Option–Control–Down Arrow.

You can edit and format proviso markers by using the controls in the Document inspector; see Formatting Overall Text Appearance to learn more.

You can cross-reference provisos as you would cross-reference provisions and other items. To learn more about cross-references, see Using Cross-References.
