Editing Provisions

You can easily add and remove provisions. You can also adjust the numbering level of provisions and give provisions a title.

Selecting Provisions

You select provisions before you work with them.

Here are ways to select provisions:
  • Click anywhere in a provision.

  • To select a provision whose content you’re editing, press Shift-Return. See Adding Content to Provisions to learn about editing a provision’s content.

Adding and Removing Provisions

You can easily add and remove provisions.

To insert a provision:
  1. Click a provision to select it.

  2. Do any of the following:

    • To insert a provision above the one you selected, choose Insert > Item Before or press Command–Option–Up Arrow key.

    • To insert a provision below the one you selected, choose Insert > Item After or press Command–Option–Down Arrow key.

To delete a provision:
  1. Click a provision to select it.

  2. Press the Delete key or choose Edit > Delete.

When you delete a provision, the Proofreader flags cross-references to this provision as drafting errors. To learn about cross-references, see Using Cross-References; to learn more about the Proofreader, see Checking for Drafting Errors.

Adjusting the Numbering Level of Provisions

You can adjust the numbering level of a provision.

To change a provision’s numbering level:
  • Click a provision to select it or set the insertion point within a provision, and then do any of the following:

    • To decrease the numbering level (promote to a more senior level of hierarchy), choose Format > Provision > Decrease Numbering Level, click the Decrease button in the toolbar, or press Command–Option–Left Arrow.

    • To increase the numbering level (demote to a more junior level of hierarchy), choose Format > Provision > Increase Numbering Level, click the Increase button in the toolbar, or press Command–Option–Right Arrow.

    • To make the provision even with its subprovisions, choose Format > Provision > Make Even with Subprovisions, click the Make Even button in the toolbar, or press Command–Option–Control–Right Arrow.

Moving Provisions

You can move a provision before the provision that precedes it, or after the provision that follows it.

To move a provision before the preceding provision:
  • Click a provision to select it or set the insertion point within a provision, and then choose Format > Move Before Preceding Item or press Command–Option–Control–Up Arrow:

To move a provision after the following provision:
  • Click a provision to select it or set the insertion point within a provision, and then choose Format > Move After Following Item or press Command–Option–Control–Down Arrow:

Adding Titles to Provisions

You can add a title to a provision.

Here are ways to work with provision titles:
  • To add a title to a provision, click the provision to select it, and then choose Format > Provision > Add Title or press Command‑T.

  • To modify a provision’s title, click the provision to select it, click the provision’s title, and then begin typing or deleting text.

  • To remove a title from a provision, click the provision to select it, and then choose Format > Provision > Delete Title or press Command‑T.

Provision titles are not checked by the Proofreader. To learn more about proofreading, see Checking for Drafting Errors.

Adding Content to Provisions

You can add a variety of content to provisions, including text, defined terms, definitions lists, cross-references, ancillary references, numbered lists, provisos, line breaks, and paragraph breaks. You can also merge provisions together.

Here are ways to work with content in provisions:
  • To add content to an empty provision, click the provision to select it, and then begin typing.

  • To edit content in a provision, click the provision to select it, click the content you want to edit, and then begin typing.

  • To delete content in a provision, click the provision to select it, select the content you want to delete, and then press the Delete key or choose Edit > Delete.

You may want to merge related provisions together. To do this, select the contents of the provisions you want to merge (by dragging, for example), and then choose Format > Merge or press Control‑M.

Setting Provisions with Uppercase Letters

You can easily set a provision in all uppercase letters

To make a provision all caps:
  1. Select the provision you want to make all caps.

  2. Choose Format > Provision > All Caps.

Converting Provisions to Numbered Lists

You can convert provisions to items in a numbered list. You may want to do this to include text, a proviso list, or other content after a series of subprovisions, but within the provision that contains these subprovisions.

To convert provisions to items in a numbered list:
  1. Select the provision whose subprovisions you want to convert to a numbered list.

  2. Choose Format > Provision > Convert Subprovisions to Numbered Lists.
